Agni Deo Singh, the Fijian trade unionist who led the Fiji Teachers Union for more than two decades and later served as Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, died on September 12, 2026. He was elected to Parliament in the 2022 election and sat in the coalition government that took office that year.
Singh was born in rural Macuata, on the northern island of Vanua Levu. He trained as a teacher at Corpus Christi Teachers College and later completed a diploma and a bachelor of arts at the University of the South Pacific. His classroom career took him to Kadavu, Nausori and Nasinu before he moved into trade union leadership.
He became general secretary of the Fiji Teachers Union in 1999 and held the post until 2006. He returned in 2007 and stayed until 2022. That year he ran for Parliament, won a seat, and took the employment, productivity and industrial relations portfolio in the coalition government.
The two union terms bracketed one of the most turbulent stretches in Fiji's modern political history. In December 2006, Commodore Frank Bainimarama staged a coup, overthrowing the elected government of Laisenia Qarase and suspending Parliament. Military rule lasted four years. Teachers and other public servants negotiated pay and conditions through that period and through the 2014 and 2018 elections that followed, before Singh left the union to run for office himself.
The Fiji Teachers Union is one of the country's largest public sector unions, representing teachers across the primary and secondary systems. Singh's long tenure as general secretary made him a familiar figure in Fijian labour politics. He moved between the classroom and the union office, and his own background as a teacher in three different regions of the country gave him direct knowledge of the schools he represented.
His entry into Parliament came at a moment of transition. The 2022 election produced a coalition government, ending more than a decade and a half of Bainimarama's dominance. Singh's ministerial portfolio covered employment and industrial relations, areas that connected directly to the union work he had done for years. The coalition brought together parties that had opposed Bainimarama, and Singh's seat gave the government one of its working numbers in a closely divided Parliament.
