Richard Riehle, the character actor who played Tom Smykowski, the downsized inventor of the “Jump to Conclusions” mat in Office Space, has died at the age of 78. His management, Wright Entertainment, confirmed his death on October 19, 2026, saying he died the previous weekend at his home in Los Angeles. Legacy.com reported that he died of natural causes.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of our beloved client, Richard Riehle,” his representatives said. “Our industry has lost an exceptional talent, and our community has lost a truly wonderful man.” They remembered him for his “genuine goodness, boundless kindness, and unwavering generosity,” especially towards young actors and filmmakers.

From Wisconsin to the stage

Riehle was born on May 12, 1948, in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, one of seven children. He discovered theatre at the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1970, and went on to earn a master’s in fine arts at the University of Minnesota. He began acting at the Meadow Brook Theatre in Rochester, Michigan, before working in regional theatre in the Pacific Northwest.

His screen debut came with a small role in the 1977 drama Joyride. On Broadway he appeared in Execution of Justice (1986), the Tony-nominated 1999 revival of The Iceman Cometh and a 2002 revival of The Man Who Had All the Luck.

Office Space, Casino and more than 400 roles

Over nearly five decades Riehle worked on more than 400 film, television and stage projects. He was the quartermaster in Glory (1989), Charlie Clark in Martin Scorsese’s Casino (1995) and Commander Gorman in Mighty Joe Young (1998). In Mike Judge’s Office Space (1999) his Tom Smykowski, a product manager terrified of the consultants deciding his future, became one of the film’s best-loved characters.

His other films included Black Rain, Fried Green Tomatoes, The Fugitive, Free Willy, Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, Bridesmaids and the horror film Hatchet (2006).

Grounded for Life and Star Trek

On television he played Walt Finnerty, the grandfather on Grounded for Life, in 45 episodes from 2001 to 2005, and Principal Ed Rooney in the 1990 Ferris Bueller series. Star Trek fans knew him as Batai in “The Inner Light”, one of the most celebrated episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and he also appeared on Voyager and Enterprise. His guest roles ranged from Quantum Leap and L.A. Law to Home Improvement, The West Wing and NCIS.

He was still working at the time of his death, with around ten projects in development. He is survived by his wife, Jane Latham, and their four children.
