Sérgio Toledo Machado, the Brazilian basketball player known across the sport by the nickname Macarrão, died September 12, 2026. He was 81. The name, Portuguese for noodle, followed him from his youth through two Olympic Games and two FIBA World Cups.
Born February 24, 1945, he carried it onto the world stage in 1964, when he joined Brazil's national team at the Tokyo Summer Olympics. Four years later he was back at the Games in Mexico City.
