Hidetoshi Nakanishi, the Japanese judoka who took the lightweight world title in 1983 and carried that form into the Los Angeles Olympics a year later, died on September 12, 2026. He was 68. The cause was stomach cancer.
Nakanishi was born on July 3, 1958, in Fukuoka Prefecture, on the northern coast of Kyushu. He trained at Tokai University, the Tokyo institution whose judo program has produced a long line of Japanese internationals, before stepping onto the senior world stage.
