Duke Carlisle, the Texas football legend who led the Longhorns to a national championship in 1963, died on October 2, 2026, at age 84. His death was confirmed by family members but no cause was publicly disclosed. Carlisle was born Emmet Augustus Carlisle III in Kaufman, Texas.
He moved to Athens as a child, where he played quarterback at Athens High School. He led the school to three straight district titles before heading to the University of Texas in the early 1960s.
