Emmanuel Uduaghan, the physician who governed Nigeria’s oil-rich Delta State for eight years, died in a hospital in Abuja on October 19, 2026, after a period of illness. He was 71. His family announced his death in a statement describing him as a beloved father, brother, uncle and patriarch.
From doctor to commissioner
A medical doctor by training, Uduaghan entered government when Nigeria returned to civilian rule, serving as Delta State’s Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003. He then became Secretary to the State Government from 2003 to 2007, one of the most senior posts in the administration of Governor James Ibori.
Governor of Delta State
In 2007 Uduaghan succeeded Ibori as governor, and he was re-elected for a second term, leading the state until 2015. His years in office spanned the end of the worst militant violence in the Niger Delta and the federal amnesty programme, and he championed efforts to diversify Delta’s economy beyond oil.
Tributes
President Bola Tinubu and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori were among those who mourned his death. His passing was confirmed months after false reports of his death had circulated on social media in June.
