Denis Boytsov, the Russian heavyweight boxer once tipped as a future world champion, died suddenly in his hometown of Oryol on October 17, 2026. He was 40. His father, Nikolai Boytsov, told the Russian news agency TASS that a blood clot had broken loose and that his son died instantly at home.
The “Russian Tyson”
A powerful, aggressive puncher, Boytsov earned the nickname “Russian Tyson” as he built an unbeaten professional record in the heavyweight division, much of it fighting in Germany. He was at one point scheduled to face a young Tyson Fury, a fight that never happened after he was forced to withdraw.
Berlin, 2015
His career ended abruptly in 2015, when he was found unconscious in a subway tunnel in Berlin with a severe head injury. He was placed in a medically induced coma for seven weeks and never boxed again. How he came to be injured was never clearly established. In the decade that followed he lived with the effects of the injury, cared for by his family in Oryol.
Tributes
News of his death drew tributes from across the boxing world, where many remembered a fighter whose rise had been cut short before he could challenge for a world title.
