The Alabama wrestling community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Jeremy “Ryan” Lambert, a two-time state wrestling champion and student at Alexandria High School, who died at the age of 16 following a single-vehicle crash.

The fatal crash happened on the night of June 26 in Calhoun County, Alabama. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Lambert was driving a 2007 Jeep Cherokee when the vehicle left the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned.

He was ejected from the vehicle and taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Authorities said he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Jeremy Ryan Lambert

Lambert had quickly established himself as one of Alabama’s brightest young wrestling stars. Earlier this year, he captured his second consecutive Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 1A-4A state championship in the 120-pound division, helping Alexandria High School finish runner-up in the team standings. His success on the mat earned him respect across the state, but those who knew him said his character mattered even more than his victories.

Alexandria High School Principal Derek Cobb described Lambert as a respectful young man who was loved by classmates, teammates and teachers. Former wrestling coach Frank Hartzog also paid tribute, saying the wrestling family had lost a teammate and friend far too soon.

Schools throughout Alabama joined in offering prayers and condolences to the Lambert family and the Alexandria community.

Funeral services have been scheduled for July 2 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Alexandria. The family has asked those attending to wear the school’s orange and black colors in Ryan’s honor, a fitting tribute to a young athlete whose passion and determination inspired so many.

Though his life was tragically cut short, Jeremy “Ryan” Lambert leaves behind a legacy of excellence, sportsmanship and kindness. His accomplishments on the wrestling mat and the impact he made on friends, teammates and coaches will not be forgotten.
