Dr. Prezell R. Robinson, the longtime former president of Saint Augustine’s University who helped shape generations of students and transform one of the nation’s oldest historically Black colleges, has died at the age of 105.

Robinson passed away peacefully on June 29, according to his family. His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from alumni, educators and community leaders who remembered him as a visionary leader whose influence stretched far beyond the campus in Raleigh, North Carolina.

A proud alumnus of Saint Augustine’s, Robinson returned to his alma mater after earning advanced degrees to begin what would become a lifetime of service. In 1967, he became the institution’s eighth president, leading the university for nearly three decades until his retirement in 1995. During his tenure, he guided the school through a period of tremendous growth, expanding academic programs, strengthening accreditation, improving financial stability and overseeing the construction of several major campus facilities.

Robinson was also respected for his calm leadership during one of the most challenging periods in American history. Following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, he helped maintain peace on campus while encouraging students to pursue justice through education and leadership. His steady approach earned him admiration throughout higher education and the wider community.

Even after retiring, Robinson remained closely connected to Saint Augustine’s University. He regularly attended campus events, mentored young leaders and continued to support the institution he loved. Earlier this year, the university and the Raleigh community honored him during a Black History Month celebration, recognizing the lasting impact of his decades of service.

Following news of his passing, former students and colleagues described Robinson as a man of integrity, wisdom and unwavering faith. Many credited him with opening doors for countless young people and leaving an enduring mark on higher education.
