Ali Haroun, Algerian independence veteran and High Council of State member, dies at 99

Mohamed Ali Haroun, the lawyer and veteran of Algeria’s War of Independence who later served on the High Council of State, has died at the age of 99. His death on October 24, 2026, was announced by the official Algeria Press Service.

A fighter for independence

Haroun was born on February 8, 1927, in Bir Mourad Raïs, in Algiers, and trained as a lawyer. He joined the National Liberation Front (FLN) at the very start of the war against French rule, launched on November 1, 1954, and remained part of the independence struggle until Algeria won its freedom in 1962.

Independent Algeria

After independence Haroun was elected to the country’s first constituent assembly. Decades later, in 1991, he was appointed minister delegate for human rights.

The High Council of State

In January 1992 Haroun became one of the members of the High Council of State, the collective body that led Algeria from January 1992 to January 1994 after the interruption of the country’s parliamentary elections, at the start of a decade of violence. Following the death of Khaled Nezzar, he was the last surviving member of the council.
