Francis Duru denied a viral illness video four months before his death

Four months before his death, Francis Duru went on Instagram to tell fans that a video showing him looking frail did not reflect his health. On October 23, 2026, his family announced that the 57-year-old actor had died “following a brief illness.”

The June video

In mid-June 2026, a clip of Duru appearing weak spread on social media, with posts suggesting he was seriously ill. Nigerian outlets reported that it alarmed fans, friends and colleagues, and that some contacted him directly to ask if it was true.

On Friday, June 19, he posted a video reply on Instagram. “I have never been that sick and will never be that sick,” he said. “And by God’s grace, we keep being stronger and stronger.”

He was angry about the clip. “That video is a handiwork of merchants of darkness, of wickedness, people who sit and concoct negativity for people,” he said, accusing those who shared it of doing so “all in the course of driving traffic.” He also warned about what social media and new technology could do to reputations: “If this is what social media is all about or AI, then we are in big trouble indeed.”

He did not say where the footage came from or when it was recorded, and he did not claim it had been altered, only that it did not show the true state of his health. “This is me talking to you,” he told fans. “Anything beyond this is their business.”

How fans reacted

Most responses to his video were supportive, with fans praying for him and criticising whoever had spread the clip. Some also noticed he looked thinner. “You lost a lot of weight, I hope everything is okay,” one follower wrote, according to Legit.ng. The site also quoted entertainment commentator Shola Adeolu, who said Duru looked “a bit pale” in the recording and noted that the actor had lost a son not long before. His 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, died in August 2024.

What is not known

The family’s statement did not name the illness, say how long he had been unwell, or say whether it was connected to how he looked in June. Nothing published since his death answers those questions, and The Death Reports has not been able to confirm any of them independently. This story will be updated if the family or the Actors Guild of Nigeria gives more details.

What is on record is the actor’s own account four months ago: he told his fans he was well and getting stronger, and asked them to believe him rather than the clip.
