In the most notorious scene of Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, Mr Blonde, played by Michael Madsen, turns on the radio, dances to Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle with You” and tortures a captured policeman. The scene made Madsen one of the most recognisable tough guys in American film. He was found unresponsive at his home in Malibu, California, on July 3, 2025, and pronounced dead. He was 67. His cardiologist later said he had died of heart failure, with heart disease and alcoholism as contributing factors.
Chicago to Hollywood
Madsen was born in Chicago on September 25, 1957, the son of a firefighter. His sister is the Oscar-nominated actress Virginia Madsen. He began acting with Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company before moving to Los Angeles, and in the late 1980s and early 1990s he built a career playing cops, criminals and cowboys, including the boyfriend of Susan Sarandon’s character in Thelma and Louise.
Tarantino
Reservoir Dogs, in 1992, made his name. He worked with Tarantino again as Budd, the brother of Bill, in Kill Bill: Volume 2, as the cowboy Joe Gage in The Hateful Eight and in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. His other films included the family hit Free Willy, Donnie Brasco and Sin City. Over his career he had more than 300 screen credits, many of them in low-budget thrillers. He also published several books of poetry.
His family
Madsen had several children. His son Hudson died by suicide in 2022, a loss Madsen spoke about publicly. At the time of his death he was preparing to publish a new book, Tears for My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems.
Madsen played hundreds of roles, but one scene with a razor and a radio is what most people remember, more than thirty years after it was filmed.
