Valerie Mahaffey, Emmy winner for Northern Exposure, dies at 71

In Northern Exposure, the 1990s drama set in a small Alaskan town, Valerie Mahaffey played Eve, a wealthy hypochondriac so convinced she was ill that she lived in a sealed, germ-free home. The role won her the Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama in 1992. Mahaffey died in Los Angeles on May 30, 2025, after a battle with cancer, her publicist said. She was 71.

Mahaffey was born in 1953 and spent part of her childhood in Indonesia, where her father worked. She began her career on stage, making her Broadway debut in the musical Rex, and her first continuing television role was Ashley Bennett on the soap opera The Doctors, which earned her a Daytime Emmy nomination in 1980.

A comic character actress

After Northern Exposure, Mahaffey worked steadily in television and film for more than thirty years, usually playing women whose good manners hid something stranger. She appeared in Seinfeld, played Alma Hodge in Desperate Housewives, and had roles in Young Sheldon and many other series. Her films included Seabiscuit, Clint Eastwood’s Sully, alongside Tom Hanks, and French Exit, in which she played Madame Reynard opposite Michelle Pfeiffer and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. Mahaffey was married to the actor Joseph Kell, and they had a daughter, Alice Richards. Announcing her death, Kell said he had lost the love of his life and that America had lost one of its most endearing actresses.

Mahaffey was rarely the star of the shows she appeared in, but she was often the character viewers remembered, and the Emmy she won for Eve came more than thirty years before her final roles.
