Michelle Trachtenberg grew up on screen. She was a Nickelodeon child star before she was ten, the lead in Harriet the Spy at ten, Buffy Summers’s mysterious little sister at fourteen and, as Georgina Sparks, the most gleefully wicked character in Gossip Girl in her twenties. She was found dead in her apartment in Manhattan on February 26, 2025. She was 39. The New York City medical examiner later said she had died of complications of diabetes.
A child star
Trachtenberg was born in New York City in October 1985 to a Russian-Jewish family and began acting in commercials as a small child. She played Nona Mecklenberg in Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Pete and Pete, and in 1996 she starred in Harriet the Spy, the film adaptation of Louise Fitzhugh’s novel about a girl who writes down everything she sees about her neighbours. It made her one of the best-known child actors of the decade.
Dawn Summers and Georgina Sparks
In 2000 she joined Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Dawn, Buffy’s younger sister, a character who was suddenly written into the show as if she had always been there, and she stayed until the series ended in 2003. She went on to star in the comedies EuroTrip and Ice Princess. From 2008 she played Georgina Sparks on Gossip Girl, a manipulative former friend of the main characters whose returns were among the show’s most talked-about episodes.
Her death
Police said there was no sign of foul play. Her family asked for privacy, and co-stars from Buffy and Gossip Girl, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, paid tribute. Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander in Buffy, died the following year.
Trachtenberg spent thirty of her 39 years working in front of cameras, and for many viewers who grew up in the 1990s and 2000s she was part of their childhood.
