Athanasios Iliadis, a Greek boxer whose name was etched into the annals of Olympic history, died on September 30, 2026, in Thessaloniki. He was 74 years old. Iliadis competed in the menβs welterweight division at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.
His participation put Greece on the map in a sport often dominated by fighters from outside the country. Born in Thessaloniki on August 23, 1952, Iliadis grew up in a city known more for its history and culture than for producing boxing champions.
