Humphrey Smith, the longtime owner and chairman of Samuel Smith Old Brewery and one of Britain’s most influential figures in the brewing industry, has died.

Smith’s death marks the end of an era for the historic Tadcaster brewery, a family-run business that has been at the heart of Yorkshire brewing for more than two centuries. Throughout his decades in charge, he became one of the most recognizable, and often controversial,  figures in British hospitality.
