The death of technology journalist and GigaOm founder Om Malik at the age of 60 has sparked an outpouring of tributes across the tech world.
While the Indian-American entrepreneur was celebrated for his contributions to technology journalism and venture investing, his personal health journey is also drawing attention to an important public health message: heart disease can strike early, but lifestyle changes can still make a meaningful difference.
According to his family, Malik died on June 24, 2026, at Stanford Hospital after a long battle with heart-related health issues.
A heart attack changed his life at 41
In a personal essay published in 2024, Malik revealed that he suffered a heart attack at the age of 41, despite being in the prime of his career. Doctors discovered multiple cardiac problems and inserted a coronary stent to restore blood flow.
He also shared that he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, a condition that significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease if left unmanaged. Following the diagnosis, Malik completely overhauled his lifestyle. He quit smoking, stopped drinking alcohol, eliminated red meat from his diet, exercised regularly, and embraced healthier eating habits.
He often wrote that while he did not hope to “live forever,” he wanted to give himself the best possible chance to enjoy life.
