John Loring, the celebrated designer, author and longtime creative force behind Tiffany & Co., has died at the age of 86.

Loring passed away on June 6 at his home in Palm Beach, Florida. Tiffany & Co. confirmed his death in a statement, remembering him as a visionary whose creativity helped shape the luxury jeweler’s modern identity for more than three decades.

Loring joined Tiffany & Co. as design director in 1979 and remained in the role until his retirement in 2009. During those 30 years, he played a major part in transforming the company from a respected American jeweler into a globally recognized luxury brand. After retiring, he was named Design Director Emeritus in recognition of his extraordinary contributions.

Beyond overseeing Tiffany’s creative direction, Loring became one of the company’s greatest historians and storytellers. He authored more than 20 books celebrating Tiffany’s rich history, its iconic jewelry collections and legendary designers, including Elsa Peretti and Paloma Picasso. Several of those books were edited by former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis during her publishing career.

Before joining Tiffany, Loring built a successful career in publishing and the arts. He served as the New York bureau chief of Architectural Digest and studied at the Γ‰cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris after graduating from Yale University. His own paintings and prints were exhibited at leading institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
