Richard E. “Rich” Matus, the longtime former boys basketball coach at Saucon Valley High School and a beloved educator, has died at the age of 74.
Matus passed away peacefully at his home in Lower Saucon Township on June 22, 2026, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Ann Marie, with whom he shared 47 years of marriage, along with their children and grandchildren.
Known simply as “Coach Matus” to generations of students and athletes, he built a lasting legacy both on the basketball court and in the classroom. During his 13 seasons as head coach of the Saucon Valley boys basketball team, Matus compiled 181 career victories, captured three Colonial League championships, and led the Panthers to a District 11 title during the 1991-92 season. His teams were consistently among the best in eastern Pennsylvania, earning him widespread respect throughout the region.

Beyond basketball, Matus spent decades as a history teacher, inspiring countless students with his passion for learning. Former students have described him as one of the most memorable teachers they ever had, recalling his humor, enthusiasm, and ability to make every lesson engaging. Former players also remembered him as a coach who believed in his athletes, encouraged them to be their best, and left a lasting impact long after they graduated.
